IWF TECHNICAL VISIT IN KOSICE, SLOVAKIA
The IWF made a Technical Visit in Kosice, Slovakia to prepare the
IWF Youth World Championships to be held from 17-22 September.
After visiting all sites including the accommodation as well as
the venue, all details were finalized in order to offer an
outstanding event. After discussions, the Organising Committee and
the Technical delegates agreed to upgrade the accommodation in order
to provide a higher quality service to the participants. The new
hotel to welcome athletes and delegations will be the DoubleTree by
Hilton Hotel Kosice. The detailed regulation and additional
information will be published soon.

TUBE MAP STOPS NAMED AFTER OLYMPIC ICONS TO
CELEBRATE LONDON 2012

Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled a special Olympic Legends
Underground Map to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games featuring
icons such as Berlin 1936 four-time gold medallist Jesse Owens as
station stops on the map. To celebrate the Games, the names of
361 tube station stops have been changed to the names of Olympic
athletes. The Underground Olympic Legends Map was designed by
Alex Trickett, international editor for the BBC sport website, and
sports historian David Brooks. You will note the following
Weightlifting athletes on the tube map: Waldemar Baszanowski,
Yoshinobu Miyake, Harold Sakata, Hossein Rezazadeh, John Davis,
Pyrros Dimas, Naim Suleymanoglu, Vasiliy Alekseyev, Liu Chunhong,
Chen Yanqing

DR. ANDRES PINA DEL ROSARIO PASSED AWAY

The International Weightlifting Federation has been
informed by the Pan American Weightlifting (PAWF) about the death of
Dr. Andres Pina del Rosario who was recently elected as Member of
the PAWF Medical Committee and was a memorable doctor of the
Dominican Olympic Committee.
The Weightlifting Family
expresses its deepest condolences to Dr. Pina’s relatives and to the
Dominican Weightlifting Federation.

ANOC CLOSES UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP

The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) ended its
first meeting in Moscow, Russia under the helm of new President, who
promises to revitalize the 204-member organization. The three-day
meeting was led by Sheikh Ahmad al Sabah, the Kuwait IOC member and
Olympic Council of Asia President. He was elected Friday to fill the
two years remaining in the term of Mario Vazquez Rana, who resigned
unexpectedly last month after 30 years in office. Dr. Tamas Ajan,
IWF President also participated in the meeting and held discussions
with the newly elected ANOC
President.

NEW LEADERSHIP OF EWF ELECTED

The European Weightlifting Federation held its
Electoral Congress on 8th April 2012 in Antalya, Turkey. A
record number of delegations (47 out of a membership of 49)
were present. The lineup of distinguished guests included IWF
President Dr. Tamas Ajan and IWF Executive Board Members
representing other continents, like Pan-American President
Willian Ozuna, Asian Vice President Maj. Gen, Intarat
Yodbangtoey and Boukar Tikire from Africa.
The Congress
delegates voted to elect the officials of the European
Weightlifting Federation for the next 4-year cycle.
In
a close battle with his Romanian colleague Nicu Vlad, Dr.
Antonio Urso (ITA) won the right to serve another four years
as President.
For the General Secretary’s position between
two candidates the majority of votes went to Dr. Hasan Akkus
(TUR) as opposed to Dr. Christian Baumgartner (GER).
As the only candidate, Marino Ercolani Casadei (SMR)
was elected to EWF Treasurer.

IOC PICKS SUCCESSOR TO REPLACE OUTGOING
MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is
pleased to announce that it has chosen a successor to replace
Dr Patrick Schamasch as IOC Medical and Scientific
Director. Dr Richard Budgett will join the organisation on
1 October following the completion of his work as Chief
Medical Officer at the London Organising Committee for the
Olympic Games (LOCOG). Dr Schamasch will retire later this
year after 27 years in the service of the IOC.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said: “Dr Schamasch
will leave the IOC after many years of outstanding service. We
are pleased to have found such a capable replacement in Dr
Budgett, with whom we first became acquainted as an Olympian
and later through his work with Team Great Britain and
LOCOG”.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – CONTINENTAL
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION EVENT IN ANTALYA,TURKEY

The European Weightlifting Championships and Continental
Olympic Qualification Event ended in Antalya, Turkey. The
event brought together 109 Women and 159 Men out of 36
countries.
In the Women’s 53 kg bodyweight category,
Cristina IOVU (MDA) broke the Junior European Record in the
Clean and Jerk with 116kg.

Tatiana KASHIRINA (RUS) broke the Clean and Jerk and the
Total European Record in the Women’s +75 kg.
Among Men,
the only recorder was Valentin HRISTOV SNEZHEV from
Azerbaijan. The young athlete broke all Junior European
Records in the 56 kg bodyweight category.
According to
the Non-Final Results, the following countries obtained 1
Olympic Quota:
Women: AZE, ROU, ESP, BUL, ALB,
FRA Men: MDA, BUL, LTU, HUN, SVK, CZE, ESP

AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – CONTINENTAL OLYMPIC
QUALIFICATION EVENT IN NAIROBI, KENYA

The Weightlifting Federation Africa held its
Executive Board Meeting in the city of Nairobi, Kenya prior to
the kick off of the African Championships – Continental
Olympic Qualification Event. Dr. Tamas Ajan, IWF President,
Dragomir Cioroslan, IWF Vice President and Dato Ong Poh Eng,
IWF Executive Board Member participated in the
Meeting.
The Opening Ceremony was held in the presence
of Kipchoge Keino, NOC President and IOC Honorary Member.
The competition started on March 30 at the Nairobi
City Hall with the participation of 49 women and 85 men
weightlifters.
Team Nigeria – coached by Patrick Bassey
– which is in Nairobi with a full squad of 15 lifters (8 male
and 7 female) is billed to slug it out with the biggest threat
coming from Algeria and Cameroon.
15 countries were
competing at the event, and 4 Continental Records were broken
immediately on the first day. Chinenye FIDELIS (NGR) lifted
87kg in the Snatch and ended with 202kg in the Total, being
both Junior and Senior African Records.
According to
the Non-Final Results, the following countries obtained 1
Olympic Quota:
Women: NGR, TUN, CMR, MAD Men: ALG,
TUN, CMR, RSA, NGR

WHEREABOUTS REMINDER
Every IWF NF shall submit their national team athletes'
whereabouts through the Anti-Doping Administration and
Management System (ADAMS) quarterly. Please make sure to
submit your whereabouts on time. Countries not submitting
whereabouts info on ADAMS on time will not be allowed to
participate in any upcoming IWF competitions including but not
limited to the continental qualification competitions. We
kindly invite you to fill in the data (name and basic
information) with LATIN
LETTERS.
